Coaching & Managing
Step up, make a difference, and become the hero your junior rugby team deserves.
We Need You on the Sideline
Our coaching teams are the lifeblood of Hutt Old Boys Marist. 100% of our junior operations rely on passionate parents stepping up to guide our kids. You absolutely do not need to be a past rugby star. The most successful junior coaches and managers are simply enthusiastic, encouraging, and organized volunteers who want to ensure every child gets a fair go on the field.
Find Your Fit: Which Role Suits You?
Whether you're drawing up plays on a whiteboard or organizing the halftime oranges, we have a vital role for you.
The Coach (The Inspirer)
As a coach, your primary goal is the FABS principle: Fun, Achieve, Belong, Safe. You will run a practice each week and lead the team on Saturday mornings. We provide all the drills, tackle clinic training, and structure you need to succeed. Game management is crucial: ensuring the WRFU 35-point differential rule is respected to keep matches competitive. If you love working with kids and sharing the joy of sport, this is your place.
The Manager (The Mastermind)
Don't want to run drills but still want to be heavily involved? The Team Manager is the most important role in the squad. You are the communication hub. You will publish game times from the WRFU draw, maintain the weekly jersey-washing roster, enforce the APPLAUD sideline code among parents, and track the critical 'Half-Game Rule' to ensure every player gets an equal run.
Your Coaching Toolkit
We don't just hand you a bag of balls and say 'good luck'. HOBM supports our volunteers every step of the season.
Small Blacks Coaching Course
All our coaches attend an elite, club-hosted NZ Rugby coaching course before the season kicks off. This covers everything from fundamental skills to managing diverse age groups.
The Rugby Toolbox
We offer guidance utilizing NZR's official 'Rugby Toolbox', packed with age-specific drills, warm-ups, and game plans so you never have to invent a practice training session from scratch.
Specialized Tackle Clinics
For coaches transitioning kids into contact (Year 3), our club runs dedicated RugbySmart tackle modules guaranteeing you are 100% confident teaching safe body positioning.
Club Gear & Apparel
All registered coaches receive official HOBM coaching kit for the season, so you look the part on the sideline and feel part of our broader Eagles coaching fraternity.
The Non-Negotiables: Safety & Vetting
Because protecting our children is our highest priority, we require a few mandatory administrative steps from every volunteer.
- 1Register online as an active 'Coach' or 'Manager' via your Rugby Xplorer account.
- 2Complete the mandatory standard NZ Police Vetting process (our Safety Officer will explicitly guide you through this).
- 3Attend the mandated WRFU Small Blacks Coaching or RugbySmart safety course prior to your team's first game.
- 4Familiarize yourself completely with the exact NZ Rugby Concussion protocols ('Recognize, Remove, Refer, Rest') outlined in your welcome pack.
Ready to Step Up?
If you're ready to create unforgettable memories for our young Eagles, contact our Junior Convenor today or simply select 'Volunteer' during the standard Rugby Xplorer registration process.
Together, we can ensure every child in the Hutt Valley has a place on the field. Your time, your patience, and your encouragement is all it takes to build the next generation of Eagles.
